South Carolina Death Certificate

Qualifications

The following people may request death certificates from the state of South Carolina:

• An immediate member of the decedent's family
• A legal representative of one of these
• Others who demonstrate a direct and tangible interest may be issued copies when information is needed to determine a personal or a property right
• Other applicants may be provided a statement that the death occurred, including the date and county of death

Cost

The fee to search for a death certificate is $12.00, which includes one certified copy of the death certificate. For each additional copy of the certificate ordered at the same time, the fee is $3.00. Cashier's checks or money orders should be made payable to the "SC DHEC." Cash is not accepted, except for requests made in person. For requests made in person you may also pay with a credit or debit card. Fees are not refundable.

Submitting Your Request

In Person:
You may order a certified copy of the death certificate by going in person to the Vital Records office, located at:

The office is open from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

You may also request a certified copy of the death certificate from the county in which the death occurred, if the death occurred within the last 5 years. For a list of county vital statistics offices, click here.
